Library to Host Candidates’ Forum for Council & School Board

On Tuesday April 5th, the citizens of Haysville will go to the polls to elect City Council and Board of Education members to represent them for the next four years.

Seven candidates are running for City Council, with four-year terms to be filled in each of the four Wards in the City. Three of the four positions are contested.

Five candidates are running at-large for the four four-year positions open on the USD 261 School Board.

All twelve candidates for these positions have been invited to a Candidates’ Forum to be held in the Community Room at the Haysville Community Library on Thursday March 24th at 7 pm.

Each candidate will be allowed 5 to 7 minutes to discuss their position on the issues and explain their reasons for seeking the office. City Council candidates will go first, in Ward order from 1st through 4th, with the order of candidates in contested races determined randomly. Following the City Council candidates, candidates for the Board of Education will speak, again with the order determined randomly.

Following candidate presentations, members of the public will be allowed to question the candidates for a period of not less than half an hour.

“Hosting a candidates’ forum is a great privilege for the library,” said Library Director Betty Cattrell. “It’s an opportunity to for every citizen to make an informed choice about their community leaders – it’s democracy in action.”

Citizens still have until March 21st to register to vote in the upcoming election. Advance voting in person will commence the day before the Candidates’ Forum is held at the Sedgwick County Elections Office. And the polls will open at 7 am on the fifth of April.
