Haysville Community Library to Celebrate Kansas Day

Noted Kansas Author Jim Hoy to Appear on Sesquicentennial

One hundred fifty years ago this month, as the American nation sundered into North and South and the greatest challenge to our survival as a beacon of freedom and democracy arose with the advent of the Civil War, Kansas became the 34th state to join the Union.

By the time Kansas achieved statehood on January 29, 1861 six states had seceded from the Union, with a seventh to follow within three days.

The origins of our state were intimately bound up with the events leading to our nation’s great Civil War, and our heritage is inextricably linked with that struggle to preserve and defend the American dream.

On January 29th, and throughout the remainder of this year, the Haysville Community Library will be hosting a series of events to celebrate the sesquicentennial of Kansas statehood, and to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the onset of the American Civil War.

It all begins on Kansas Day, when celebrated Kansas author Jim Hoy visits the library for the kickoff event of Kansas 150.

The evening will begin with the annual free and open to the public Ham and Bean supper, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, starting at 6:30 pm.

At 7 pm, noted author and folklorist Jim Hoy will offer a special program.

Hoy has published more than a hundred articles on the Great Plains and Flint Hills, ranching and the folklife of the American West, as well as nine books, including Cowboys and Kansas: Stories from the Tallgrass Prairie, Flint Hills Cowboys: Tales of the Tallgrass Prairie, and (together with Tom Isern) Plains Folk: A Commonplace of the Great Plains and Plains Folk II: The Romance of the Landscape. He is, in addition, a Flint Hills native and a Professor of English at Emporia State University.

Also scheduled for Haysville’s celebration of Kansas’ birthday – an announcement concerning a few of the many events planned at Haysville Community Library for the Sesquicentennial Year.
