Healthy Kids Challenge at Haysville Community Library

More than two dozen south central Kansas librarians met today at the Haysville Community Library to learn how to help preschoolers and their families learn how to practice healthy eating, engage in physical activity and learn more through literacy

Healthy Kids Challenge (HKC), a Kansas-based nonprofit organization, is helping to make it possible for healthier eating and physical activity choices, while actively demonstrating the fun of reading, “everywhere that children live, learn work and play.” With a grant funded by United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, the “Healthy Kids Challenge: Reading — Smart Eating – Moving … Balance My Day” program is designed for Kansas libraries who offer programs for preschoolers and early elementary children and their families, helping them to “provide fun, interactive edutainment centered around reading, healthy eating, physical activity.”

Participating libraries and librarians will receive toolkits and teaching resources along with HKC coaching for one full year to help implement healthy eating and activity messages and practices into library programs. As the HKC website explains, “for years, nutrition educators in schools have advocated the link between literacy and healthy eating. However, in a recent article, Nemours Health and Prevention said that it is too late to reach kids in elementary school. In every community, libraries and their outreach to pre-school children through various programs are a perfect place to provide earlier support for healthy eating and physical activity.”
