The Anomalous Naked Mole Rat

An extraordinary little beast, the Naked Mole Rat burrows beneath the dry grasslands near the Horn of Africa in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.

Its characteristics and behavior are highly unusual, as attested in the BBC News feature Meet the ‘Sabre-Toothed Sausage’. Indeed, some respects, as one of only two known mammalian species to exhibit eusociality, naked mole rats behave more like bees or wasps than other mammals. “There are so many aspects of their biology that are extreme.”
