Census and Sensibility

Two famous towns of the Old West are engaged in a new-fangled shootout to see which community has the highest participation rate for the 2010 Census.

The mayors of Deadwood, South Dakota (population 1380), and Tombstone, Arizona (population 1504), have each challenged their respective citizens to beat the other in census response rates “for Old West bragging rights.”

Incidentally, the mayors of St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, have joined in their own competitive challenge, as have the Governors of Michigan and Ohio.

Is Haysville up for a challenge?

  1. I beg indulgence for making a non-census-related comment, but I felt compelled to pass on that, in typing out episodes from a work written long ago at http://dustbowlpoetry.wordpress.com, much to my surprise I discovered that Episode #215, although sad, refers to Hays, Kansas!

    What a coincidence! Karma!
