What’s Up?

Advocates of the aggressive exploration of the solar system by manned spaceflight have begun to approach the point of despair. Nearly four decades after humankind last ventured to the moon, no clear plan or destination guides the American effort at human exploration of space.

It seems much as it would if Columbus had returned from his voyages to distant new lands, and Spain had returned to half a century of slumber.

One week ago the 10th Annual Isaac Asimov Memorial debate took place at the American Museum of Natural History, where what Scientific American characterizes as “five leaders of the space exploration intelligentsia” discussed NASA’s plans (or lack of plans) for human spaceflight. See John Matson’s brief report of the proceedings in Room for Debate: Where if Anywhere is NASA Headed?
