Methane Hydrate Energy Potential

A Methane Hydrate Deposit on the Gulf of Mexico Seafloor (USGS)

Over the past decade, the US Department of Energy has been exploring the energy potential of methane hydrate, a solid form of methane and water occurring at high pressure in the ocean depths or in cold Arctic permafrost. What’s the status of that research?

The National Academies Press has released a preliminary online edition of its upcoming publication Realizing the Energy Potential of Methane Hydrate for the United States. A free, readable online edition of the 121-page document is available from NAP here, where you’ll also find access to a four-page brief summary of the report’s contents.
