Social Security Claiming Guide

For anyone approaching the age of retirement or nearing the age of eligibility for Social Security, the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College has published an excellent 28-page document discussing the question of when to file a claim for Social Security.

As the authors of The Social Security Claiming Guide emphasize, “how old you are when you claim Social Security has a dramatic effect on the monthly benefits you and, if married, your spouse will get for the rest of your lives.” This is so because “the later you claim Social Security, the higher your monthly benefit. As you approach retirement, how long you work and when you claim will usually have a far greater impact on how much income you’ll have in retirement than how much you save or how you invest.” This topic and a host of related questions are clearly and concisely discussed in this excellent little guide.
