The Cost of Raising a Child

Expenditures on Children by Families, 2008

Since 1960 the US Department of Agriculture has issued periodic estimates of the cost of raising a child from birth through age 17. The Department’s Center for Nutrition Policy & Promotion has now published an update to these estimates, a 32-page document entitled Expenditures on Children by Families, 2008. Using data gleaned from the 2005-06 Consumer Expenditure Survey updated to use the 2008 Consumer Price Index, this report develops estimated childrearing expenses for both two-parent and single-parent families, with account taken of age, number of children in household, family income and area of residence.

For the United States as a whole, annual childrearing expenses ranged from $11,610 to $13,480 for a child in a two-child, married-couple family in the middle-income group.
