James Madison’s Birthday

james-madison

Today is the 258th birthday of James Madison, fourth president of the United States.

Madison’s greatest contribution to American history was less his tenure as president than his intimate involvement in the creation of the Constitution, a role which loomed so large that he is frequently referred to as the “Father of the Constitution”. Equally important was his authorship, along with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay of The Federalist Papers, a series of invaluable newspaper articles explaining and defending the new Constitution which were crucial to its ratification and which remain an invaluable and illuminating exposition to this very day.

In honor of James Madison, the Haysville Community Library will be distributing free copies of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence to anyone who wishes to obtain one. Just drop by the circulation desk to acquire one of your own.
